TechWreck Open a Wreck Desk

Incident reports for small teams

When tech wrecks, write it up right.

The server filled up. The update broke the printers. Someone clicked the link. TechWreck walks you through the report an investigator would write (timeline, cost, severity, root cause, fixes), then reads it back and tells you what is missing.

How it works

Six parts. One report anyone can follow.

TechWreck asks the questions in the order investigators use, does the arithmetic, and keeps the wording about conditions instead of people.

  1. 01

    The wreck

A short name, the kind of failure and a plain summary for someone who was not there.

  2. 02

    The clock

When it started, when someone noticed and when it was back. TechWreck works out time to notice, time to fix and the total.

  3. 03

    Impact and cost

People and customers affected, data lost or exposed, and a cost estimate you can show: people time, lost sales, outside help, parts.

  4. 04

    Timeline

One line per moment, sorted by time. Paste a log or a chat export and the lines that carry a time in a common format become entries.

  5. 05

    Why it happened

Five whys, a root cause in a sentence or two, and 17 common contributing factors to tick.

  6. 06

    Action items

Prevent, Detect or Respond, each with an owner and a date. The Action Board lists every open one across your desk.

Report Check

It reads your report back to you.

Every save runs the Report Check. It looks for the gaps that make incident reports useless six months later and says where to fix them.

How to write a good one
  • Tip Nothing is written between 2026-03-10 02:10 and 2026-03-10 08:40 (6 h 30 min). What was happening then?
  • Tip Blame words found: "human error". A blameless report names the condition that made the mistake easy, not the person.
  • Tip Every action item is "Respond". Add one that prevents the wreck or detects it sooner.
  • Fix "Back to normal" is earlier than "noticed". Check the dates and times.

Severity scale

Four levels, decided by rules you can read.

  1. SEV-1 Wreck

Private data exposed, data lost for good, or customers (or 50+ people) without service for 4 hours or more.

  2. SEV-2 Major

Customers affected, exposure or loss not ruled out, 4+ hours down, or 10+ people down for an hour or more.

  3. SEV-3 Minor

An hour or more down, more than one person affected, or data lost and recovered.

  4. SEV-4 Bump

One person, under an hour, nothing lost.

Every rule, and how the cost is worked out

Blameless by design

The questions ask what made a mistake easy, not who made it. The Report Check flags blame words.

Private by link

No account, no email address, no analytics scripts, trackers or ads. Your desk opens only with its own link.

Written by you

No AI writes or reads your report. The site does the sums, sorting and checks with plain code.

Prints clean

The report page prints as a tidy document, or saves as a PDF from your browser.
